Gambling Addiction

Gambling options in Virginia have expanded rapidly in recent years. Residents can now place bets on their phones, gamble online, play “skill” machines in retail locations such as gas stations and restaurants, or visit licensed casino resorts. Each of these forms of gambling operates under different rules and levels of oversight. As access has increased, concerns about gambling addiction have also grown.

Gambling disorder is recognized as a behavioral addiction. Health researchers report that newer betting technologies can increase exposure and opportunity to gamble, and studies associate compulsive gambling with financial strain and other behavioral health challenges. The Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services defines problem gambling as behavior that compromises personal or family relationships, work, or the ability to meet financial obligations.

Virginia’s licensed casinos are among the most regulated gaming entities in the Commonwealth and are required to support addiction response efforts. Under state law (§ 37.2-314.2), a portion of casino gaming tax revenue funds the Problem Gambling Treatment and Support Fund, established to support prevention, education, and treatment services statewide. This includes confidential assistance through the Virginia Problem Gambling Helpline (1-800-GAMBLER / 888-532-3500) and a voluntary self-exclusion program that allows individuals to bar themselves from all regulated casinos in Virginia.

This page provides background information and public resources so residents can better understand gambling-related risks, available support services, and the regulatory framework governing casino gaming in the Commonwealth.
